Saturday Boxing Odds: Baby Bull Makes Comeback and More

Juan DiazThere is not much in the way of big-time boxing this coming weekend, but the sport books have posted several lines for cards in the United States. On Saturday in Lightweight 12 rounds action at the House of Blues in Boston, Massachusetts as popular Irishman Stephen Ormond returns to action to face Marcos Jimenez. Ormond enters the fight a -1600 favorite over Jimenez, who is coming back at +760. Ormond is coming off a disqualification loss against Terry Flanagan in February of 2014 that saw him lose his six fight winning streak. Flanagan has gone on to become a world champion since, so Ormond is looking to stay relevant in this fight. Since the loss to Flanagan he has won three fights in a row of the eight round variety and this is his return to longer fights. Top Rank Promotions is at the Aerial Theater in Houston, Texas on Saturday night with a full card of fights that are set to air on Unimas in the United States. The theme of the show is “comebacks” as veteran fighters Juan “The Baby Bull” Diaz and Mike “Mile High” Alvarado both return to pursue past glory. In the case of Diaz, he is 40-4 overall and a former World Campion in the Lightweight division. He left boxing in December of 2009 after losing to Paulie Malignaggi, and a 2010 return saw him lsoe to Juam Manuel Marquez. In 2013 and 2014 he relled off five wins in a row, but he has now had another 15 month layoff before his fight with veteran Fernando Garcia (30-7-2). Diaz is a big -4050 favorite, with Garcia coming back at +1450. Garcia too is coming off a 15 month layoff, and he has gone 3-3 in his last six fights overall. Also on the comeback trail is popular veteran Mikey Alvarado, who has lost four of his last five fights and was last seen in January of 2015 losing to Brandon Rios. Alvarado is 34-4 overall and at 35 years old, he will need to fast track his return. He is facing Saul Corral, a fighter with a 19-6 overall record who is on the first 6 fight winning streak of his career. Alvarado comes in a major -4050 favorite as well, with Corral returning at +1450. Alvarado is facing a do or die fight here to save his career. Though he is a heavy favorite, his slide has been caused by personal problems outside the ring and he has come very cloe to being written off before. Here is a situation that Corral is being brought in to make him look good, so a loss would signal the end for Alvarado.
