UFC Fight Night 93 Newcomer Breakdown: Christian Colombo

Prior to each UFC card, Jay Primetown takes a close look at debuting fighters. In the latest installment, we look at Danish veteran Christian Colombo as he makes his UFC debut against Jarjis Danho at UFC Fight Night 93 in Hamburg, Germany. Christian “Godzilla” Colombo Hometown: Denmark Age: 36 Height: 6’5” Reach: Weight Class: Heavyweight Camp: Renegade MMA Career Record: 8-1 Key Wins: None Key Losses: Viktor Pesta Background A professional since 2010, Colombo has fought in Europe against mostly regional veterans. He has six wins by stoppage, but every time he faced a step up in competition he was unable to get the finish. Strengths

  • Good size for the weight class
  • Decent hands
  • Strong knees from the clinch

  • Making his UFC debut at an advanced age
  • Has fought only once in three years
  • Footwork is very slow
  • Takedown defense is poor at best
  • Minimal ground game

Match-up against Jarjis Danho This is about as low level of a fight as one will see in the UFC. Both of these fighters are in their mid-30s. Colombo has only fought once since 2013 and has a limited base of skills to begin with. Colombo has decent hands, but will he be able to do much when pushed against this cage? I doubt it. I expect the majority of this fight to be a battle for control against the cage with Danho’s strength giving him the advantage. Danho has heavy hands and is certainly capable of finishing early if he can land. If he’s unable to land a big strike, his conditioning will really come into question and that likely gives Colombo the advantage in an extended fight. This is a fight that will be sloppy and certainly not one to consider betting. UFC Ceiling At 36 years old and just one fight in three years, it’s very difficult to expect Colombo to fare well in the UFC. It’s not a situation where he’s done well against quality opposition outside the UFC; the lone UFC fighter he faced, he lost to and did so in decisive fashion. Colombo was simply brought in to fill out the card in Hamburg especially given its proximity to his home country of Denmark. It wouldn’t be a shock if Colombo gets a win in his debut, but any step up in competition will be a real challenge for him.
