Johny Hendricks Turned Down Short Notice Fight and has Left Team Takedown

Johny HendricksFormer UFC Welterweight Champion Johny Hendricks was a guest on today’s episode of MMA Junkie Radio, where he made a couple of revelations. When co-host George Garcia (AKA “Gorgeous George”) started digging deep with questions during his first ‘A Little Birdie Told Me’ segment, things got really interesting. “Bigg Rigg” admitted to being offered last weekend’s Kelvin Gastelum fight, which ultimately went to Neil Magny, who won by split decision. He said he was unable to take the fight on such short notice because he was on vacation with his family at the time and wouldn’t be able to cut down to the welterweight limit in time. As much as he loved the match-up, he did not think that making it happen was a realistic option. The big bomb Hendricks dropped was that he has left his long-time home gym of Team Takedown in Dallas, TX, though he did not reveal specifics or exactly what he has in store for the future. However, he stated two of his four coaches at Team Takedown have reached out to him, and he may continue working with them, if they are willing to follow him out. Hendricks’ reason for leaving the gym was vague, saying it was because they did not agree on certain things, and that it was time for him to pull a step back and focus on himself. He said he tried to negotiate with Team Takedown, but negotiations did not work out too well. Though it remains a question mark where he will be training for his next fight, Hendricks plans on making his return to the Octagon in February for UFC 196 in Las Vegas. He plans to stay at 170 pounds and once again wear the gold around his waist.
