Here are my quick thoughts on the UFC Vegas 118 Opening Odds:
- The main event of UFC Vegas 118 is a five-round welterweight bout between former champion Belal Muhammad and rising contender Gabriel Bonfim. Muhammad has lost his last two fights against Jack Della Maddalena and Ian Machado Garry, while Bonfim has won four straight bouts and is 6-1 overall in the Octagon. Bonfim has a legitimate puncher’s chance in this bout, and he also has slick submissions, but Muhammad is as tough as they come and carries five-round, championship experience. It’s a tough one to call, but with Bonfim on a win streak right now, the sportsbooks opened him up as the betting favorite for this main event fight.
- In the co-main event, top-five-ranked middleweight Brendan Allen fights the unranked Edmen Shahbazyan. Allen is coming off a TKO win over Reinier de Ridder in his last bout, and he beat Marvin Vettori in his fight before that. Despite two big wins in a row, Allen is fighting outside of the rankings against Shahbazyan, who has won his last three fights in a row and four of his last five overall. Although Shahbazyan has a puncher’s chance in this fight, Allen is the best overall fighter and deserves his favorite status in the matchup.
