Post-UFC 213: And the Bonus Goes to…

The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) was back in Las Vegas, NV this past Saturday night (July 8, 2017) with UFC 213: Romero vs. Whittaker. It was an exciting night of scraps that saw five of 11 bouts end inside the distance. After the event concluded, the UFC awarded $50,000 to two fighters for “Performance of the Night” and two fighters for “Fight of the Night.” The lines to wager on these props were available at Several Bookmakers.

The post-fight bonus winners were…

Rob Font earns Performance of the Night for his second-round guillotine-choke submission of Douglas Silva de Andrade. It was an outstanding outing by the Boston fighter, who picked up his second straight victory. He got the better of the Brazilian with his striking before wrapping up the bout with a submission.

Chad Laprise earns Performance of the Night for his third-round TKO of Colorado’s Brian Camozzi. The Canadian got the better of Camozzi in the first round, but Camozzi came back and outstruck him in the second. The fight was tied heading into the third round, where Laprise did not waste any time hunting for the finish until he secured it in impressive fashion. He now enjoys a two-fight winning streak inside the Octagon and has found a new home at 170 pounds.

Noteworthy Performance(s):

– Alexei Oliynyk defeated Travis Browne via second-round rear-naked choke submission in a very entertaining heavyweight battle that saw him hurt and nearly finished in the opening stanza. An incredible come-from-behind victory for the Ukrainian, who has put together consecutive wins inside the Octagon.

– Thiago Santos defeated Gerald Meerschaert via second-round TKO, his second consecutive TKO victory in the organization.

– Trevin Giles defeated fellow promotional newcomer James Bochnovic via second-round knockout to earn his first UFC win and remain undefeated as a pro.

Robert Whittaker and Yoel Romero earn Fight of the Night for their five-round war in the main event. Romero got the better of Whittaker in the first two rounds. But as fatigue began to set in, Whittaker put the pedal on the metal and began to outpoint the Cuban, clearly going on to win rounds three and four. It all came down to the fifth and final round of action, where Romero appeared to slightly be getting the better of Whittaker until an unfortunate slip saw him fall to the canvas, allowing his opponent to get on top and put a stamp on the very close round. It was an entertaining middleweight battle, and now fight fans look forward to seeing the new interim middleweight champion Whittaker take on reigning 185-pound champ Michael Bisping when he returns to action in the near future.

Noteworthy fight(s):

– Anthony Pettis defeated Jim Miller via unanimous decision on the judges’ scorecards in his return to the UFC’s lightweight division. In my opinion, this bout was more entertaining than the main event, which took home the $50k.

– The aforementioned Oliynyk vs. Browne bout, which I also believe was more entertaining than the main event.
