Here are my quick thoughts on the UFC Edmonton Opening Odds:
- The main event of UFC Edmonton is a five-round welterweight bout between Mike Malott and Joaquin Buckley. Malott is 7-1 overall in the UFC, and he has won four straight fights since his only loss in the Octagon, a third-round TKO upset defeat to Neil Magny at UFC 297. As for Buckley, he is coming off back-to-back losses to Kamaru Usman and Sean Brady, where his terrible takedown defense was badly exposed. While Buckley certainly has the KO power to hurt Malott and finish him, the Canadian is the far more well-rounded fighter, and it was surprising the sportsbooks opened him as the favorite, though the betting odds quickly flipped.
- In the co-main event, we have Erin Blanchfield battling Jasmine Jasudavicius in a women’s flyweight bout. Blanchfield is coming off back-to-back wins over Tracy Cortez and Rose Namajunas, while Jasudavicius most recently defeated Karine Silva by decision. While Jasudavicius is a very good fighter and one who can’t be counted out of any fight, Blanchfield has been the more consistent fighter overall in the UFC, and it makes sense that she is the betting favorite to win despite fighting in Jasudavicius’s home country of Canada.
