Here are my initial thoughts on the Opening Odds for Dana White’s Contender Series 89:
- The main event is a women’s bantamweight bout between Bella Mir and Alex Apodaca. Mir is arguably the best women’s bantamweight prospect in MMA right now. The daughter of former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir, she is 4-0 in her pro MMA career with three finishes. She also has an extensive grappling career and wrestling skills, and she should enter the UFC immediately after winning this fight because, let’s face it, this should be an easy win for her. As for Apodaca, she has a 3-1 pro record, but all of her fights have gone the distance. This will be a victory for Mir, and the only question is how she gets it done. Given her grappling chops, look for Mir to take this fight to the mat and submit Apodaca in the very first round.
- In the co-main event, we have a heavyweight bout between Guilherme Uriel and Mario Piazzon. Uriel fought on DWCS last summer and was finished by Josh Hokit, while Piazzon won via DQ against Alexander Soldatkin on DWCS in 2023, but he wasn’t signed to a UFC contract by Dana White. Both guys deserved the chance to step into the DWCS cage again to earn another shot at a UFC contract, but with Guilherme being the knockout artist, look for him to win this heavyweight fight.
