Here are my quick thoughts on the UFC 293 Opening Odds:

  • The main event of UFC 293 is a fun five-round middleweight bout between the champ Israel Adesanya and challenger Sean Strickland. Adesanya is coming off a huge knockout win over Alex Pereira in his last fight, while Strickland has won back-to-back fights against Nassourdine Imavov and Abus Magomedov. While Strickland has looked great in his last couple of fights, this is just a terrible stylistic matchup for him on paper against a far superior striker. Adesanya is the best middleweight in the world, and he should be able to get past Strickland easily. Go with Adesanya to win this fight, and the -400 opening odds seem fair given the matchup here.
  • Also on the card is a heavyweight bout between Tai Tuivasa and Alexander Volkov. Tuivasa is coming off back-to-back losses to Sergei Pavlovich and Ciryl Gane, while Volkov has knocked out Jairzinho Rozenstruik and Alexander Romanov in his last two fights. Although Tuivasa has lost his last two fights in a row, you can’t completely discount him here given his knockout power. Still, Volkov has been far more consistent as of late, and he deserves to be favored.
  • Overall, this should be a fun card where a lot of the local Aussies and Kiwis get the wins.
