Here are my quick thoughts on the UFC 289 Opening Odds:

  • The main event of UFC 289 features UFC women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes taking on top contender Irene Aldana, who filled in for Julianna Pena after the former champ pulled out with an injury. Nunes is coming off of a five-round beatdown over Pena last year where she won back her title, while Aldana knocked out Macy Chiasson with an upkick to the body in her last outing. Aldana is one of the most powerful strikers in her weight class, but Nunes is the better fighter overall, and the long-time champion. You have to give Aldana a chance to get a knockout here, but overall, this should be Nunes’ title fight to lose here.
  • In the co-main event, it’s Beneil Dariush against Charles Oliveira. Dariush has won his last eight fights in a row which includes an upset win over Mateusz Gamrot in his last outing. As for Oliveira, he was submitted by UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev in his last fight. That being said, he’s the former champ for a reason, and to see him as an underdog here is a bit surprising. Dariush is awesome, but it’s hard not to want to take a shot on Oliveira as a dog.
