Here are my quick thoughts on the UFC 272 Opening Odds:

  • The main event of UFC 272 is a five-round welterweight bout between Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal. These two former-friend-turned-rivals will finally meet in a heated grudge match headlining this pay-per-view event. Covington is coming off of a decision loss to UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman in his last fight. Although he lost, the fact he went the distance with the champ and gave him an honest fight proved that Covington is among the best in the world at welterweight. As for Masvidal, he’s coming off of two straight losses to Usman. The first, back in 2020 on Fight Island, came via decision. But in the rematch in Jacksonville in 2021, Masvidal got knocked out by an Usman bomb. It will be interesting to see how Masvidal rebounds following such a devastating loss. Covington is the favorite here, but Masvidal has a puncher’s chance and he has historically fought well in an underdog role.
  • The co-main event is a five-round lightweight bout between Rafael dos Anjos and Rafael Fiziev. The fight was booked for February but was shifted to this card instead. Fiziev has been on a roll but RDA is a former champ, making this battle of Rafaels a very intriguing matchup. Fiziev opened as a favorite, but dos Anjos, like Masvidal, has performed well as an underdog. EDITOR’S NOTE: Fiziev is out of the fight due to COVID-19 and he has been replaced by Renato Moicano on short notice.
