Dana White’s Contender Series 42 takes place on Tuesday, October 5 at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada. The offshore sportsbooks recently opened up the betting odds for the event, and MMAOB staff writer Adam Martin takes a look at the opening odds below.

Shimon Smotritsky -140
Mike Malott +110

Carlos Hernandez -185
Daniel Barez +155

Genaro Valdez -125
Patrik White -105

Fernie Garcia +130

Joseph Holmes -300
Shonte Barnes +240

Here are my initial thoughts on the Opening Odds For Dana White’s Contender Series 42:

  • The main event of this week’s DWCS is a welterweight bout between Shimon Smotritsky and Mike Malott. Smotritsky is only 21 years old and he is already a perfect 7-0 in MMA, which includes two wins in Bellator. This is a very young, talented fighter who has a ton of upside and who can show massive growth from fight to fight. His opponent here is Malott, a Canadian prospect who fights out of Team Alpha Male. Malott was one of the top Canadian prospects for many years, but he has not been very active in recent years. However, he has been serving as a coach at TAM, so he’s still been very active in the fight game. As much as I want to pick Malott here as a dog, I would have to lean towards the younger Smotritsky to win this fight.
  • The co-main event features Carlos Hernandez against Daniel Barez in a flyweight bout. Hernandez has won his last six fights in a row, including a victory in LFA in his last outing. Barez, meanwhile, is riding a six-fight win streak into this contest. This looks like a very close fight on paper, so I would lean towards the dog from a pure betting value perspective based on this opening line. It’s worth noting this fight has been bet down to a Pick ’em since opening.
