Legacy 29’s Leonard Garcia: ‘A lot of guys didn’t want to fight me but Shane Howell stepped up’

MMA Oddsbreaker’s Frank Trigg speaks with Legacy Fighting Championship 29 featherweight Leonard Garcia as he prepares for his main event bout tonight (March 21, 2014) against Shane Howell in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

The longtime UFC and WEC veteran is currently riding a three-fight winning streak since receiving his UFC release and that’s made him a fighter that not nearly as many up-and-comers are eager to face as one would expect:

“I had a lot of guys not want to take the fight at 145 for this next one. I wanted a quick turnaround and to fight right away and the promoter told me he was having problems finding guys. This Shane Howell kid came up and he was like, ‘Look. I want to fight him and I’ve won my last six so let’s do it!’ It seemed like it made sense. This kid used to fight at 135 his whole career. I believe this is his first fight at 145. It’s a pretty big jump for him and it’s a young kid trying to come up and make a name for himself so it’s a good fight for me. But at the end of the day, I do want guys that got a little bit of a bigger name or a bit more notoriety behind them. But at the end of the day, man, winning is the most important thing. It doesn’t matter who they put in front of me, I have to win.  That’s my whole goal here.”
