Past weight-cut issues for Renan Barao make matchup with Aljamain Sterling a 140-pound catchweight

The California State Athletic Commission has forced former UFC champion Renan Barao to fight at a 140-pound catchweight bout instead of at bantamweight against Aljamain Sterling at UFC 214 on July 29th in Anaheim. FloCombat was the first to report the news.

This stems from Barao’s weight-cutting issue from 2014 in California when he was set to rematch T.J. Dillashaw in the UFC 177 main event. On the day of weigh-ins, the Brazilian had to be hospitalized after a bad weight cut and was removed from the card. CSAC Executive Director Andy Foster told FloCombat.com if Barao is able to make 140 pounds, the commission would allow him to compete at bantamweight again in California.
