Here are my quick thoughts on the UFC Vegas 49 Opening Odds:

  • The main event of UFC Vegas 49 is a five-round catchweight (160lbs) bout between Islam Makhachev and Bobby Green, who took the fight on short notice after Beneil Dariush pulled out with an injury. Makhachev has gone 10-1 overall in the UFC and he has won his last nine fights in a row leading into this one. He was favored to defeat Dariush, and now he’s a massive favorite against Green, who is filling in on short notice. Green has looked phenomenal as of late, winning back-to-back fights against Al Iaquijnta and Nasrat Haqparast. He took little damage against Haqparast so he was able to take this short-notice bout against Makhachev. However, it looks like a tough matchup on paper against an elite wrestler. Green has the better striking, but if he gets taken down, it feels like it would be hard for him to get up.
  • As for the co-main event, it’s a middleweight bout between Misha Cirkunov and Wellington Turman. Cirkunov is coming off of a split decision loss to Krzysztof Jotko in his middleweight debut, while Turman is coming off of a split decision win over Sam Alvey. This should be a competitive fight that ultimately comes down to Cirkunov’s wrestling and his chin strength.
