Here are my initial thoughts on the UFC Fight Night 172 Opening Odds:

  • The main event is not really deserving of headlining a card, but it is a fascinating matchup nonetheless. Eye is one of the top contenders in the women’s 125lbs division while Calvillo is moving up a weight class and is immediately being paired against a top-three opponent. This is a huge opportunity for Calvillo to jump way up the rankings and for Eye to remain at the top of them. It’s a very close fight on paper but with Eye being more established in the division she opened as a slight favorite here. Keep your eyes peeled for my full main event preview article.
  • The co-main event is, again, not really your typical co-headliner, but it’s still an interesting matchup. Vettori and Roberson were supposed to fight last month in Florida before Roberson had issues with his weight cut and the fight was scrapped, leading to a run-in between the two rivals at the fighter hotel. A few weeks later and they can now settle their differences in the cage. Both men are currently riding two-fight win streaks making this a battle between two up-and-coming middleweights who have some momentum behind them. With Vettori having fought a higher level of competition, he deservedly opened as the betting favorite here.
  • Another intriguing matchup sees a battle of bantamweight grapplers in Dvalishvili and Borg go at it. Dvalishvili is currently riding a three-fight win streak and is coming off of a dominant win over Casey Kenney while Borg just lost a decision to Ricky Simon a few weeks ago. With Dvalishvili riding a wave of momentum into this fight, you’d have to imagine he’s the clear favorite to win. The oddsmakers opened the line a bit low, as Dvalishvili is now -400.
  • One of the most exciting matchups on the card is a featherweight battle between Fili and Jourdain. Both guys are tremendous young talents at 145lbs and this should be a candidate for “Fight of the Night.” Fili is coming off of a decision loss to Sodiq Yusuff but he has a ton of experience and has proven he can hang in there with some of the best featherweights in the UFC. As for Jourdain, after losing a decision to Desmond Green in his UFC debut he picked up a huge KO win over Doo Ho Choi in his last fight. Fili is the veteran and opened as the favorite, but don’t count out Jourdain, who is absolutely a live dog in this fight.
