UFC president Dana White today announced at the UFC on FOX 6 press conference that former UFC welterweight champion and Hall of Famer Matt Hughes has officially announced his retirement and that he’s taken a job with the UFC as VP of athlete development.

A two-time welterweight champion who defended the belt seven times, Hughes is considered by many to be one of the very best fighters of all time in any weight class and he holds the UFC record for most wins with 18. He holds notable career victories over current or former champions Georges St-Pierre, BJ Penn, Carlos Newton and Matt Serra, and all told his record of 45-9 is one of the best in the sport’s history considering the level of opposition he fought.

However, at 39 years old and coming off two-straight KO losses, it was the right time to call it quits. Hughes will be missed but it’s nice to see that the UFC has given him a job so he’ll still be around the sport in some capacity like Chuck Liddell is.

Rampage plays with Playstation Vita at UFC presser

Also in attendance at the UFC press conference was former UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, who was focused with playing his Playstation Vita videogame rather than caring about his fight this Saturday night against Glover Teixeira at UFC on FOX 6. “Rampage” does not appear at all to be motivated heading into this fight against Teixeira and does not appear to be worth a bet at all despite his tempting underdog pricetag of +250.

UFC looking to book Belfort vs. Rockhold

According to Ariel Helwani, the UFC is looking to match up Vitor Belfort vs. former Strikeforce middleweight champion Luke Rockhold in an upcoming bout. It’s possible that, with no clear-cut No. 1 contender at middleweight with Chris Weidman out, the winner of Belfort vs. Rockhold will get the next title shot.

It wasn’t said at what event the fight will take place but expect it to be booked for either UFC on FOX 7 or UFC 159, both of which take place this April in San Jose and Newark, respetively.
